Mary The Mother of Jesus
A YOUNG GIRL FROM JUDEA LEARNS
SHE WILL BEAR THE SON OF GOD
The miraculous events surrounding Jesus’s birth begin with a couple in Judea: a young virgin named Mary and her fiance Joseph.
A VIRGIN IS STARLED
The story begins with an unexpected visitor. The angel Gabriel appears to Mary, a young virgin. She is startled when the angel tells her she is favored by God and will become pregnant and give birth to son to be called “ Son of the Most High.” (Luke 1:31) Mary asks how this will be possible, since she is a virgin. Gabriel explains that the Holy Spirit will come upon her and overshadow her, so that the child will be called the Son of God. Mary accepts Gabriel’s words and says, “ Here am I, the servant of the Lord….” (Luke 1:38)
Although distressed to learn his young fiancee is pregnant and not by him, Joseph takes Mary as his wife when an angel tells him in a dream, “Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, fort he child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”
Before the baby’s birth, Joseph and Mary head to the town of Bethlehem in order to register for a cencus. During their stay in Bethlehem, Mary delivers baby Jesus and marvels at the events that surround his arrival.
